5G is a technology which is heavily dependent on cloud based technology to support its operation, with cloud technology influencing many different aspects of 5G network operation, on an end to end basis. This course seeks to introduce some of the key concepts behind cloud, including foundational level information on exactly what the cloud is, as well as some of the key enabling technologies such as NFV, SDN, microservices, containers and Kubernetes. Focus will then be provided on application use cases of the technology, covering the 5G Core, C-RAN and MEC.

This short course focuses specifically on the 5G Registration procedure, cataloguing the step by step activity that is required to take place. This includes an initial discussion on the role of the Network Repository Function, focusing on Network Function Registration and Service Discovery. Following this, a detailed analysis of all 5G Registration aspects will take place, including node selection, subscriber identification, subscription profile acquisition and policy control.

This course sets out to introduce and explain how 4G/5G can be used for FWA (Fixed Wireless Access), and as such support wireless connectivity to currently unconnected areas or provide an alternative to broadband or cable technology. As such, the FWA terminology and architecture is explained in terms of the functions related to the CPE (Customer Premises Equipment), as well as the variants for Outdoor FWA and Indoor FWA. The course also describes key radio spectrum aspects, as well as features in 4G and 5G which aim to improve the performance and connectivity for FWA devices. The 4G/5G network connectivity options are described before moving onto network procedures relating to how the FWA device connects and transfers data.
